Music should make you feel more alive – not yesterday, not tomorrow, not next year when the time is right, but NOW. This was the idea behind Martin Kern’s latest album NOW IS THE MUSIC. For this new effort the saxophonist and composer wanted to combine the traditional playing he admires in the greats with the very relevant influences of his own time to create a music at once immediate and timeless. All the songs were composed in a relatively short time frame giving the whole album a cohesive flow whereby each subsequent song complements and further fulfills the purpose of the one before it. To produce a more organic sound the session was recorded completely on analogue equipment over the course of just two days. Often the most fulfilling moments in a performance are those that have not been carefully premeditated and mapped out. In this case the musical arrangement is used as a vehicle to facilitate inspiration rather than dictate to it or take centre stage. Instead the focus here is on improvisation and playing the moment, hence the title.
He had the great pleasure and opportunity to work with a very solid band of passionate musicians capable of executing his vision:
Pianist Michelangelo Mazzari came to Berlin in 2008 and quickly drew attention with his very unique, imaginative and generous style.
Bassist Ed Schuller from N.Y. can be heard in countless clubs around the world playing with the greats of jazz. He complements his steady groove while comping with some excellent and imaginative solowork.
Drummer Kenny Martin, originally from N.Y.as well and a Berliner by choice since a long time, pushes the band with his well-rounded and dynamic style, and keeps the tension high. He was like Ed already playing on the last CD “Visions”.
Trumpeter Christian Grabandt shines with a melodic and full tone as well as some very clear lines. He blends in perfectly with the sound of the tenor.
Nel 1994 ha partecipato all’incisione del cd “Inside colors” di Maurizio Maniglia.
Dal 1996 si esibisce con regolarita nei piu importanti jazz-club di Milano, Capolinea, Scimmie, Nord-est caffe, Le trottoir, Biblos, Osteria del Jazz…
Nel 1998 suona con il suo trio nella rassegna “Break in jazz” organizzata dal comune di Milano.
Nel 1999 partecipa al festival “Giovani TALENTI” organizzato da Adriano Mazzoletti ad Arona segnalato dal critico Alberto Riva.
Nel 2000 ha suonato in Piazza Reale nella rassegna “Tirar mattina”, retrospettiva su Umberto Simonetta, organizzata dal teatro Franco Parenti e promossa dal Comune di Milano durante le iniziative per “Milano d’estate”.
Nel 2000 esce il disco in piano solo “Musiche di scena”, contenente i brani composti per gli spettacoli che hanno debuttato al teatro Zazie di Milano. Ha collaborato anche con Fabio Mazzari (attore e regista) portando in scena numerosi racconti (piano-voce recitante) per l’associazione “Scena aperta” rappresentando tra gli altri “Racconti per Milano”, ”Portrait in jazz” e “Il muro” inserito nel “Progetto Sartre ” a Legnano.
Nel 2005 FINALISTA PREMIO INTERNAZIONALE MASSIMO URBANI. Scrive e compone musiche per jingle radiofonici. (tonno rio mare, tuborg, ip, iveco, Yamaha, corriere della sera, Kellog’s, McDonalds ecc..)
Nel luglio 2005 accompagna gli attori del serial tv “Vivere” in uno spettacolo itinerante sul lago di Como, alternandosi al piano con Renato Sellani.
Si e esibito il 31 luglio al Festival Jazz di Clusone in un concerto per solo piano… Ottobre 2006 partecipa con il trio alla rassegna “ARTE E VINO” di Caulonia (RC).
Marzo 2007 ha suonato a Nizza durante la performance dell’artista Michelangelo Jr partecipando attivamente alle “Lezioni di indisciplina” con Andrea G. Pinketts, Pierangelo da Crema, Running Mannarelli.
Collabora con il Centro di Drammaturgia Contemporanea O.U.T.I.S per il quale ha composto, registrato, ed eseguito musiche per lo spettacolo “L’anello della liberta” ”che e andato in scena al. Piccolo Teatro di Milano.. durante la rassegna “TRAME PER 5 GIORNATE”.
LUGLIO 2008 ESCE IL CD con il trio “Jekyll e Hyde” per l’etichetta MUSIC CENTER.
FINALISTA NEL PREMIO LUCAFLORES 2009, a gennaio 2009 ha suonato all’Accademia delle scienze durante il Salon Sophie Charlotte a Berlin.
